The Coldest Night of the Year is a winterrific family-friendly fundraising walk in support of local charities. Let’s change the tune for people experiencing hurt, hunger, and homelessness... because it’s cold out there. Join us on February 22, 2025 - team up, fundraise, and walk with us!
Elliot Lake Women’s Group is the non-profit organization that oversees the operations of our local emergency shelters: Larry’s Place Fresh Start Shelter for Men and Maplegate House for Women. Our services assist those in need between Sault Ste. Marie and Sudbury Ontario, encapsulating the entirety of the Algoma District. While we receive some government funding - the bulk of our services, especially Larry’s Place Fresh Start for Men, are entirely funded by community sponsors, community members, and events like Coldest Night of the Year.
In the last year, it has become evident of how quickly those in need of stable shelter, food security, and community supports can suddenly arise in our community. On any given night, Elliot Lake Women’s Group has shelters and supports available for 20 Men, Women and Children. In the last year, we have served over 150 different individuals between our emergency shelter system, transition homes, and service programs.
Our region is facing an increase in homelessness and a need for affordable and stable housing for the most vulnerable members of our community due to the rising cost of living. Now more than ever, we need our community’s assistance to help us to continue to provide access to safe and stable housing, advocacy assistance, healthy meals, emotional, physical, spiritual and social supports, as well as many other opportunities for growth and well being.
With the support of our community, Elliot Lake Women’s Group Inc has been providing emergency shelters for those displaced by intimate partner violence and homelessness since 1982, and with your help we look forward to continuing to provide these invaluable services.
